WHY HOPE?

WHY HOPE?

If we read our daily newspapers, watch television channels, surf the Internet and connect with the social media, we mostly get the pessimistic news. Terrorism, refugees, atrocities and natural disasters seem to dominate the news. We seem to live in a world of fear and despair and our media portrays this reality.

However, if we take a longer term view, we find that countries can change their destiny and create a better future for their population. It is very much within the realm of possibility for a country to bring about change if there is hope. At the same time, a country needs to create hope for its citizens. Thus, a country needs hope to create positive change but it also needs to create hope in the first place. Can hope be a cause or effect of positive change?

World Hope Index treats hope as a social product and explains why we need to discuss and in doing so improve our prospects of being hopeful.

Methodology

Methodology

For the methodology, I have divided the World Hope Index into four parameters that contain 15 indicators in total. The four parameters are: Standard of living, governance, innovation and Absence of fear.

After collecting all the raw data, in order to keep the index standardized for all indicators I have normalized all the data from a range of 0 –1.  This  allows  me  to calculate all  the  different  indices  together  from  varieties  of  data using a standardised approach.  A significant aspect about the World Hope Index is that it also the very first index that measures the average income of bottom 40% of population, as an alternative to the average GDP per capita. I have done this with the help of the Palma ratio, conceptualised by Prof. Gabriel Palma.

The full methodology is explained with all the formulae in the research paper, which is available for free download.

ABOUT ME

Hi there!

My name is Rahul Waslekar from Mumbai, India. I completed the International Baccalaureate from Indus International School, Pune. I first thought about the idea of a World Hope Index in 2014 during my summer internship project, where I first made a model of this index. After making the model and sharing it with eminent scholars, intellects and leaders around the worldI have refined my approach, thoughts and even methodology while writing the present paper.

Apart from the index, my hobbies include, learning French, playing the keyboard, surfing the internet, watching cookery shows and also have a varied taste of music ranging from alternative rock to electronic. I enjoy comedy movies and also have a taste for suspense movies. I also participate regularly in model UN conferences. Please write to me and tell me what you feel about Hope in your country and also your thoughts and comments on the World Hope Index.
